Top 10 Most Anticipated Games for 2018 (Matthew)

So everyone it’s a brand new year and with it comes a brand new set of games to get excited about.

This will be the first of 3 top 10 lists to be posted on the site over the course of the next 2 days. In this list we’re going to take a look at some of the games releasing this year (In particular); the ones that I’m most excited for. So without further ado; lets get straight into it;

1. Marvel’s Spider-Man

So coming in at my top spot on this list is Insomniac Games’ dive into the world of Marvel comics and in particular; that of Spider-Man. From what we currently know at this point; the game will focus on an older Peter Parker who has to take on Mr. Negative and a host of other villains who are trying to destroy the beautiful landscape of New York City.  Given that Spider-Man is probably my all-time favorite superhero and Insomniac Games are one of my favorite development studios with amazing games like Sunset Overdrive and Ratchet & Clank in their portfolio; I think this could be like a match made in heaven. I’ve been a fan of Spider-Man games since I was little and from everything I’ve seen of the game; I personally think it could be the best.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is currently slated for 2018 exclusively on the PlayStation 4.

2. The Wolf Among Us 2

Coming in at second place is the long awaited second season to the incredible Telltale series; The Wolf Among Us. The Wolf Among Us dropped a few years back to critical acclaim and was based on the well known Fables comics created by Bill Willingham which saw many beloved fairy tale characters and fables being evacuated from their woodland homes and relocated amongst humans (Referred to as Mundys) in a secluded part of New York City called Fabletown which is under the protection of sheriff Bigby Wolf. The Wolf Among Us over the years has got better and better for me (Even overtaking The Walking Dead) as my favorite Telltale series. This announcement a few months back was one of the true highlights of my year and the one thing that prevents it from getting first place is the lack of any actual in-game footage. All in all though, this year is a really good year for Fables fans.

The Wolf Among Us 2 is coming at some point in 2018 however Telltale have yet to announce which platforms the game will come to.

3. Monster Hunter World

Taking the #3 spot on my list is the upcoming action RPG; Monster Hunter: World from Capcom. After recently playing the beta (Preview article coming within the next few weeks); I am convinced that this has the potential to be one of my best games for  2018 as I enjoyed every single second of gameplay that I spent exploring the exotic locations of Monster Hunter World. Given this will be my first Monster Hunter game aswell builds up my excitement more in the fact that I’m now going to be able to experience a series which receives so much praise. In addition to the beta which included 4 player co-op; the game will have larger maps, seemless transitions, a high number of customization options and even the opportunity to turn your feline companion into an 8-bit Mega Man to celebrate the 30th anniversary. In addition to this, PlayStation gamers also get an additional little bonus with the ability to play the game as Horizon: Zero Dawn protagonist; Aloy.

Monster Hunter: World will be available in 2018 for PC and worldwide for PS4 (Exclusive in Japan) & Xbox One on January 26th 2018; marking the first time a main entry in the series has appeared on a PlayStation Console since Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the PSP back in 2009.

4. Soul Calibur VI

In at number 4 on my list is another game that I was eagerly awaiting an announcement for in 2017 with Soul Calibur VI. I’ve always been a huge fan of Soul Calibur from my days playing Soul Calibur II on PS2 & Gamecube to the newer entries of Soul Calibur IV & V on the PS3 and have been waiting for a sixth entry for quite some time now. While it was one of the later reveals of 2017; we got plenty of footage to satisfy the thirst for the new entry. The game features the new Reversal Edge mechanic which works similar to the Combo Breaker from Killer Instinct which when executed, the Reversal Edge will showcase the counter-attack in a dynamic camera view. In addition to this, 2 classic fighters to the series were confirmed in the reveal with Mitsurugi and Sophitia returning while the story is set during the events of the first game to “uncover hidden truths”.

Soul Calibur VI will be available at some point in 2018 for PS4, Xbox One & PC.

5. Kingdom Hearts III

Taking fifth place is the long awaited third entry of the Kingdom Hearts series. Kingdom Hearts III has been in development for an incredibly long time (Just over 10 years) and we have barely seen much footage on the game since it was announced all the way back in 2013 prior to the release of the PS4 & Xbox One. Kingdom Hearts III will be the final chapter of the Dark Seeker Saga and will see Sora, Donald & Goofy revisiting classic worlds such as Olympus (Hercules) while also visiting many new worlds such as Tangled, Big Hero 6, Toy Story and possibly; Monsters Inc. if rumors are to be believed.  In addition to this; there is still rumors circulating that Star Wars and Marvel worlds could possibly make an appearance in the game which adds to my excitement level.  From the few snippets of gameplay that we have seen; the game looks remarkable and with all the heavy hitters from the previous games returning to work on the game (Tetsuya Nomura and Yoko Shimomura to name a few); this game is looking like the game Kingdom Hearts fans have been waiting for.

Kingdom Hearts III will hopefully make it’s current time frame of 2018 for PS4, Xbox One & PC.

6. MediEvil

The sixth entry on my list is the upcoming ground up PS4 remake of MediEvil. Growing up in the PS1 era; the MediEvil series were some of my true go to games alongside other classics like the Crash Bandicoot series and the Tekken games. The 2017 PlayStation Experience was honestly a bit of a dud compared to the previous years however with this being the only real big announcement there; they did earn a few redemption points. For anybody who doesn’t know; MediEvil was a true cult PS1 gem that saw a resurrected knight by the name of Sir Daniel Fortesque taking on the evil forces of a sorcerer called Zarok who summons an army of monsters and zombies to attack the small quiet town of Gallowmere.  It’s nice in my opinion to see Sony return to this classic franchise and I’m honestly excited to see how Sir Dan looks in glorious 4K on my “Skele-vision”.

MediEvil is slated to release exclusively on the PS4 later in 2018.

7. The Walking Dead: The Final Season

So coming in at 7th place is the finale to the long running Walking Dead series from Telltale Games. While I am excited to see how they finish the series which helped their success skyrocket; I’m also a bit skeptical and worried as I wasn’t the biggest fan of playing as Clementine in Season 2 since I felt The Walking Dead at it’s core was a much better and more powerful story when you were playing as a guardian protecting a child or your family. This in many ways is why I preferred Season 1 and A New Frontier over Season 2. I am really excited to see how Clementine’s story will end and I’m hoping it goes out with a bang rather than a wimper.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season will be available at some point in 2018 and much like The Wolf Among Us 2 has no confirmed consoles as of typing.

8. Detroit: Become Human

In 8th place on my most anticipated list is Detroit: Become Human. I’ve been heavily interested in Detroit since it’s announcement a few years ago and ever since I’ve been anticipating the latest adventure from Quantic Dream. The game looks like it’s taking a step further from the visuals used in Beyond: Two Souls while the gameplay and multiple endings look to have been improved to something unlike their previous games. I like how in this game; every little action that you make in a mission could drastically change the overall outcome of the story and the detective gameplay that was shown during the Connor crowd play demo at PSX looked very detailed and thorough.

Detroit: Become Human will be available exclusively for the PS4 in Q1/Q2 2018

9. God of War

Coming in 9th place on my list is the long awaited next installment of the God of War series. God of War was always a very interesting series to me with it’s take on Ancient Greek lore and now with the newest installment; Kratos is turning in his blades of chaos and the greek gods for an Axe and his shot at Norse mythology. There are many things that are looking interesting about this entry such as the inclusion of Kratos’ son and the new camera angle and open world-ish feel the game will have. Everything that I have seen of this game so far has confirmed for me that it would probably be a day 1 purchase and I can’t wait to continue the adventures of Kratos.

God of War will be available in Q1 2018 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

10. Days Gone

In 10th place on my list is a very interesting looking survival horror title with Days Gone. From the moment Days Gone was shown, I was convinced it has the potential to become a best seller for the PlayStation 4 taking an open world environment and combining it with zombie hordes similar to that of World War Z (Which coincidentally is also getting a game). The few bits of gameplay that we have seen from Days Gone has looked remarkable with dynamic weather systems and day/night cycles adding to the games open world being a living breathing entity in itself. I’m also a big fan of Samuel Witwer (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed) who will be portraying protagonist; Deacon St. John.  Overall; I personally feel that Days Gone has the potential to become another phenomenal new IP for PlayStation like Horizon: Zero Dawn was in 2017.

Days Gone is currently slated to release in 2018 exclusively for the PS4.

Honorable Mentions
Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet

So the first of my honorable mentions goes to the latest entry in the Sword Art Online video game series; Fatal Bullet. SAO: Fatal Bullet takes inspiration from the Gun Gale Arc of the Sword Art Online anime which sees Kirito enter the cyberpunk world of Gun Gale Online; a world where players can win actual money to spend in the real world and a new psychopath by the name of Death Gun is killing players. Given that I still haven’t been able to fully beat any of the previous SAO games yet; this game looks like one I could play a lot of  as it switches the typical sword and magic gameplay the series has become known for with laser swords (lightsabers) and guns changing the whole mechanic of the game into a 3rd person shooter with RPG elements. All of this combined with the fact that co-op is returning could lead to a fun game to play with friends.

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet will be available for PS4, Xbox One & PC on February 23rd 2018.

Jurassic World Evolution

My 2nd Honorable mention is upcoming simulator;  Jurassic World Evolution. This game not only serves as a movie adaptation of 2015’s Jurassic World but also a successor to PS2 classic; Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis. Much like it’s predecessor; the game allows you to essentially build and manage your own Jurassic World (Park in the predecessor). In addition to this; the game will feature creature development aswell as many locations and dinosaurs to unlock through 29 dig sites.

Jurassic World: Evolution is set to release around Q2/Q3 for PS4, Xbox One & PC to tie in with the latest movie; Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

A Way Out

My final honorable mention is upcoming co-op adventure; A Way Out. A Way Out is the second game from Josef Fares; the creator of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons which will follow Leo and Vincent; two convicts who must escape prison and stay on the run from the authorities. This game looks like such a unique experience and I can’t wait to play this incredible looking story.

A Way Out is set to release for PS4, Xbox One & PC on March 23rd 2018.

So that is my list of anticipated games for 2018 and while there is a huge plethora of other games that I am excited for such as Metroid Prime 4 and The Last of Us: Part II…they currently don’t have release windows yet and so unfortunately didn’t make the cut on this list.

So what do you think? Are you excited for any of the games on my list? Is there something you’re excited for that I didn’t mention? Be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments section below and if you liked this article be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

We hope you all continue to support us into 2018 which is our 5th anniversary and all of us here at UGNN wish you all a very happy new year.
