The Weekend Playlist – Week ending March 19th 2017

Hello everyone and welcome to the weekend playlist where we give you our personal thoughts on what has been occupying our weekends.

This weekend 3 of our team have recommendations for you this week so without further ado, let’s get started.

Matthew McNamee; Chief Editor at UGNN:

Last Game Played –  Goat Simulator

So I recently decided to pick this up for PlayStation 4 given how cheap it was and because of just how funny the games description was. The basic purpose of the game is what is on the box. You play as a Goat and you can cause as much mayhem as possible. This game is seriously so stupid however I have enjoyed what I have played so far because it is literally just a fun and stupid game to (literally) throw yourself into. Definitely check it out if you get a chance.

Last Movie(s) Watched – Beauty & The Beast (2017) & Logan

So this week I only saw 2 movies and while I would normally only put the last one I saw; these 2 movies just so happen to be my favorite movies of the year. The first movie I watched this week was the live action adaptation of Beauty & The Beast which I was extremely excited about seeing given how much I love the original. Beauty & The Beast like the original follows the story of a prince who is cursed by a witch after his arrogant and hateful nature towards her and is turned into a hideous beast. He is told the only way he can break the curse is if he finds someone he can love who can love him in return before the last petal of an enchanted rose falls and withers away. So many years later; A girl named Belle finds her way to the beasts castle to rescue her father who has been held hostage by the beast. As the two become friends over time; they start to realize there might be something there that wasn’t there before. This film is a fantastic adaptation of the cartoon and while it will never be as good as the original (purely for nostalgic reasons); this film is still really good since it adds to the story, new songs join the mix and it is interesting to see these characters and this world once again. Highly recommended.

The most recent film I watched this week was my favorite movie of the year so far in the form of Logan. Logan takes place in an alternate future that sees the Adamantium in Wolverine’s body poisoning him causing him to age and not heal properly. Being among the last few mutants alive; Wolverine strives to care for an elderly Professor X who is suffering from a brain disease however when a young girl appears exhibiting mutant abilities similar to Wolverine; He has to protect her and Professor X at all costs as they head on the run to North Dakota away from violent pursuers. I honestly don’t want to say anything more to avoid spoilers but this movie is truly a beautiful and poetic film that is a fitting final portrayal from Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. Incredible performances all around, the gore was incredible and definitely tugs at the heart strings. A true must watch for anyone. P.S. Like the trailers aswell, it is also very similar to The Last Of Us at times.

Last TV Show Watched – Iron Fist

So after finishing my scrubs marathon over the weekend, I devoted my entire sunday to watching the latest outing from Marvel’s Netflix division in Iron Fist. Iron Fist follows Daniel “Danny” Rand who comes back to New York City 15 years after surviving a plane crash in the Himalayas to find that a lot has changed since he left. During those 15 years; Danny was trained by Buddhist Monks in Kung Fu and eventually became the Iron Fist; An ultimate weapon that is fueled by wielding Chi-Energy. After visiting his families company; He finds out that some very bad people have gotten on the inside including the evil enemy group he was trained all his life to defeat. I just want to make this abundantly clear; Avoid what the critics say about this one at all costs. This show is fantastic with some incredible performances, Great Character Development, Brilliant Fight Sequences and more. The show also sets things in motion for the upcoming Defenders season. For me this show is at around the same standard as Daredevil Season 1 (Season 2 is still my favorite) and considering the cast of this show apparently didn’t have as much prep time as the other Netflix shows I have to say that is impressive. All in all, Definitely do not listen to the critics.

Last YouTube Video Watched – The Defenders Teaser Trailer

So last YouTube video I watched was the teaser trailer for the upcoming Marvel Netflix series; The Defenders. The Defenders will see the Netflix Marvel Heroes (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & Iron Fist) teaming up to save New York City from a highly dangerous Ninja clan & cult called The Hand (Who are seen in Iron Fist & Daredevil Season 2) but the team will not only have to face a threat more dangerous than anything they have ever encountered but also learn to understand the concept of teamwork. This trailer is done perfectly for me only revealing enough to get people excited but not enough to spoil anything. The rendition of the classic Nirvana song; Come As You Are suits this series teaser particularly well and I can’t wait to see The Defenders (Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage & Finn Jones as Iron Fist) facing off against The Hand which currently has Sigourney Weaver as one of the members. Check this trailer out.

Last Piece of Music Listened to – Evermore by Dan Stevens

So ever since I saw Beauty & The Beast on Friday, I have not been able to get this incredible new song out of my head. This song to me was not only performed at the perfect moment in the movie but honestly to me it feels very personal to me and in a way I feel it almost describes some of the things I feel at times perfectly. This incredible song is performed by Dan Stevens who portrays Beast in the movie and also appears in the FX show Legion which I also highly recommend. Check out this beautiful song below.
