The Weekend Playlist – Week ending January 15th 2017

Hello everyone and welcome to the weekend playlist where we give you our personal thoughts on what has been occupying our weekends.

This week’s weekend playlist only consists of me and Sam due to everyone else being busy so without further ado.

Matthew McNamee; Chief Editor at UGNN:

Last Game Played – Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour

So this week I’ve been playing a lot of games but the last game I played this weekend was Duke Nukem 3D: World Tour. I bought this a few weeks ago for cheap in the January sale on PSN and after finally getting the platinum trophy on DOOM this week I was in the mood to play another game similar. Duke Nukem filled that hole and Duke Nukem 3D was already a great game to start with when it was released so many years ago. The anniversary World Tour edition also added some new levels which were a blast to play through although one thing I will say is that the Platinum was way too easy to achieve for Duke Nukem since I got the platinum in about 2 hours. Still a great game though so definitely check it out.

Last Movie(s) Watched –  La La Land, Resident Evil & X-Men: Apocalypse

Since nearly everybody else couldn’t take part in this weeks playlist, I decided I’d fill in the blanks for a good majority of the team in my other sections. So the first film I saw this week was X-Men: Apocalypse. Set after the events of Days of Future Past; Apocalypse follows the X-Men as they face a new threat from Ancient times who sets out to destroy humanity for their betrayal to him back in Ancient Egypt. When this threat known as Apocalypse creates 4 horsemen with powerful mutants (Storm, Angel, Psylocke & Magneto) and sets to create a new world in his image; Professor X, Beast & Mystique must create a new team of X-Men (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler & Quicksilver) to take on the threat in a last fight for humanity. This film is really good despite what the critics say and features an incredible cast including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Evan Peters & Sophie Turner to name just a few in this star studded cast. Definitely worth a viewing and one of the more darker entries in the X-Men series.

The next film I watched was Oscar nominee; La La Land which is a musical from the director of the phenomenal Whiplash. La La Land follows a young aspiring actress who attempts to make it big in Hollywood when she meets a Jazz Pianist who dreams to one day open his very own jazz club. The two soon find out that they were both destined to meet each other and they both set out to achieve their dreams. I honestly don’t want to say much else about this movie because I feel like this is a movie that is worth watching to truly appreciate it. The movie features a brilliant cast including Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Finn Wittrock & J.K. Simmons to name a few. In addition to this, the story is great and the tunes are catchy and enjoyable. This is a must watch and it’s understandable why it’s nominated.

The final movie I’ve watched this week was Resident Evil. I decided recently that I wanted to revisit this movie series given that the final one is out in cinemas next month and I haven’t seen them all in a while (apart from Apocalypse which happens to be my favorite). Resident Evil follows Umbrella worker Alice who is taken into a secret underground facility called The Hive by a team of mercenaries working for the Umbrella Corporation who have been sent in to eliminate all evidence of the viral outbreak that occurred there. Unknowingly to the group, the people who were down there when the outbreak happened are no longer in the realm of the living and the group must learn to stick together and survive the unrelenting horrors hidden within the secret facility under the streets of Raccoon City. This movie is a fun little action movie which while it doesn’t stay true to the roots of the games; it is really fun.

Last TV Show Watched – Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Smallville & Sword Art Online

So in terms of TV this week, I’ve been watching some interesting picks. The first show I watched was the entire 1st season of new Netflix original; Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. The show tells the story of the unfortunate events of the Baudelaire Orphans (Violet, Klaus & Sunny) who after losing their parents and home to a horrible fire are put in the care of their malicious and evil; Count Olaf who does everything in his power to try and steal the large inheritance left to the orphans for when the oldest (Violet) comes of age. The first 2 episodes felt pretty slow if I’m being truthfully honest however the rest of the series picked up from episode 3. The cast are remarkable with the child actors doing a great job, Neil Patrick Harris does excellent as the wicked Count Olaf, Quick shout out to veteran voice actor; Tara Strong who voices Baby Sunny’s mumbles and the breakout star of the show in Patrick Warburton who gives an excellent performance as Narrator and character; Lemony Snicket where he has truly shown a different versatility to his acting.

Next up, I’ve been continuing my binge of Smallville and have recently reached just over the halfway point of Season 3. I pretty much summed this show up in the last weekend playlist in the fact it’s a great story about the early years of Superman with great acting and music. Check this out if you haven’t already; you won’t regret it.

Finally this week, I decided to revisit Sword Art Online after recently catching up on the Abridged series. SAO is a remarkable anime and is probably my favorite (sorry Death Note & Attack on Titan). Sword Art Online follows a group of gamers who get trapped in a deadly MMORPG called Sword Art Online through the use of a special VR headset called Nervegear. The players find out that if they die in the game or anyone tries to pull them out; it will result in the player dying in real life. In order to escape the game by reaching the 100th floor, Kirito; A young gamer who beta tested SAO sets out to battle and fight his way to victory by also making new friends in the form of fellow gamers; Klein, Agil, Silica and Sachi to name a few while also finding love and a partner in high leveled player; Asuna whom he is willing to put everything on the line for to protect. This is a remarkable anime that must be seen by people and should easily be a game made for PlayStation VR and Oculus at some point.

Last YouTube Video(s) Watched – Dragon Ball Z Abridged, Death Battle, Mark Hamill’s The Trumpster

So I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube recently and so I’ll just go with the last 3. So the videos I’ve been watching include Dragon Ball Z Abridged which I finally managed to catch up on again recently and despite catching up I decided to rewatch episode 55 because I just loved the comedy in that episode from things such as Trunks and Vegeta arguing to Goku confronting Cell. I just couldn’t stop laughing and I definitely recommend this show to anyone.

Next up was a recent episode of Death Battle which pitted Marvel’s iconic Merc with a mouth; Deadpool against My Little Pony character; Pinkie Pie. This was hilarious to watch since both characters are iconically known for their ability to break the 4th wall. It resulted in a match unlike any I’ve ever seen on Death Battle before and it had me creased. The ending to this fight is so unexpected and even has some very unique guest stars. Definitely check this video out.

Final video I’m gonna include this week is Mark Hamill’s The Trumpster which has seen Mark Hamill following a suggestion by one of his Twitter followers and reading tweets of presidential elect; Donald Trump as his iconic character of The Joker. I’m not going to lie; I’ve watched these videos now so much and I still laugh out loud. These videos are proof that Mark Hamill is a true legend to man and he must be protected at all costs. Are you listening to me 2017; Go nowhere near Mark Hamill.

Last Piece of Music Listened to – Superman Theme by John Williams

Once again, Been listening to loads of music this week but this iconic tune just happened to be the last piece of music I listened to. Give it a listen if by some miracle you haven’t already.

Sam Elliot; Editor at UGNN:

Last Game Played – Konrad the Kitten

This title is definitely not one that I would usually go for, but I had just received my oculus touch and wanted to review all the games I could. This title will be the next part in my oculus 101 series and not wanting to spoil much, this game is an early access tamagotchi and so it misses a lot of key features that made a tamagotchi so good that I got it banned from my school when I was six over betting…However that story is for another day.

Last Movie Watched –  Guardians of the Galaxy

With it’s 80s soundtrack and it’s awesome visual effects, guardians of the galaxy is one of my favourite movies ever. It completely took me by surprise as I hadn’t watched any of the marketing and trailers that had been produced and so I went in completely blind. Everyone who’s reading this right now has definitely seen this film, but if you haven’t, make it number 1 priority.

Last TV Show Watched – Sherlock

Series 4 has just wrapped up for this modern recreation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s British detective novels. Though the beginning was disappointing, the 2nd episode was absolutely stunning and I was quite excited for the 3rd and final installment. Wanting to give no spoilers to anyone who hasn’t seen it, though the last episode goes on for a bit too long, it was still a brilliant episode.

Last YouTube Video Watched – Big Empty Sandboxes (The Jimquisition)

Thank God for him…

Last Book or Article Read – N/A

Nothing this week.

Last Piece of Music Listened to – Mrs. Robinson by Simon & Garfunkel

I hadn’t listened to these in a very long time so I cranked up my speakers and put on this song. Absolutely brilliant, definitely worth a listen.

Below is the feature image for this week made by myself (Matthew) featuring Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour & Konrad the Kitten.
