The Weekend Playlist – Week ending January 8th 2017

Hello everyone and welcome to the weekend playlist where we give you our personal thoughts on what has been occupying our weekends.

This week’s weekend playlist is the first of many to come in 2017 and the whole UGNN team has recommendations for you this week however Sam will only be recommending a game due to work so without further ado, let’s get started.

Matthew McNamee; Chief Editor at UGNN:

Watch Dogs 2 - Ubisoft Montreal - Ubisoft
Watch Dogs 2 – Ubisoft Montreal – Ubisoft

Last Game Played – Watch Dogs 2

So I’ve been playing a few games this week but the last one I played was the newest entry in the Watch Dogs series. So far I am loving this game and it just feels so much more enjoyable and fluent than the first game. I feel like the characters are just a lot more likable, the idea behind the games story and gameplay is definitely more unique than the previous game and it’s just so fun. I still haven’t had much of a chance to play too much of this since I got it at Christmas (going for the platinum on Doom) but I’m definitely excited to see what else this game has to offer.

Last Movie(s) Watched –  The Lion King, Passengers & Assassin’s Creed

So this week I’ve only seen 3 films and since Sam can only make a game recommendation this week I figured I’d fill it up with the 3 movies. So the first movie I saw this week was Sci-Fi movie; Passengers which stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence as 2 people who are woken up 90 years early on a spaceship transporting humans to a new colony planet. As time goes by they start to realize that their is something seriously wrong with the ship and they have to fix it before it results in the ship being destroyed along with everyone on it. This movie is brilliant and feels like a space version of Titanic. Chris Pratt is definitely remarkable and to me is a stand out performance for him with both me and Jonnie agreeing after watching the movie that if Hollywood was to do a live action version of Dead Space; Chris Pratt would be perfect to play Isaac Clarke. Long story short; Definitely check this movie out.

The next movie I saw was pretty much 20 minutes after coming out of seeing Passengers and it was the long awaited movie adaptation of Assassin’s Creed. The story follows convict; Callum Lynch who is recruited into the Abstergo program after a faked execution in order to help a templar group find the mysterious ancient artifact known as the apple of eden. Through the use of a machine called the Animus; Callum is sent back into the memories of his ancestor who was a guardian of the apple; An assassin who goes by the name Aguilar during the Spanish Inquisition. After learning techniques through the bleeding effect; Callum must decide whether he is going to destroy the Assassin’s or fight with them against the Templar order. I have to say that I personally enjoyed Assassin’s Creed and being a big fan of the games; I have to say it’s one of the more faithful adaptations out there. It’s definitely enjoyable and worth a watch.

The final movie I watched this week was The Lion King. I was working on the site and I decided that I wanted to watch a film while I worked and since I hadn’t seen it in at least 5 months, I decided to put this movie on. The Lion King follows young cub Simba who after a tragic incident runs away from his home and while away grows into a leader and learns life lessons that he must come to use when he takes on a rival lion who has taken over his home. The Lion King is easily my favorite Disney movie of all time and I easily recommend this movie to everyone.

Last TV Show Watched – Smallville

So since I recently finished my binge watch of Friends. I was stuck trying to think of a TV show to watch and while I did ponder Dexter for a while (Which I’ll be starting after I finish this binge) I decided to revisit Smallville which is a show I grew up with and still remember fondly. I finished the first season in 2 days and I’m currently onto Season 2. Smallville follows the early years of Clark Kent as he adjusts to his abilities and deals with multiple metahumans affected by the meteor rocks (Kryptonite) that fell during the meteor shower that hit Smallville when Clark first arrived. In addition to dealing with his powers, Clark must also deal with his feelings for his long time crush; Lana Lang & His new friendship with Lex Luthor. Smallville has a phenomenal cast of actors including Tom Welling, Kristen Kreuk & Michael Rausenbaum (Lollipop Chainsaw). I love this show so much and honestly rewatching it and being the big comic book fan that I am; I honestly think that Smallville might have actually surpassed Breaking Bad as my favorite TV show of all time and I will recommend this show to people until the day I die.

Last YouTube Video Watched – Riverdale: Perfect Town Extended Trailer

So I decided to look into this show since I’ve heard a few things about it recently on Social Media and since it’s also coming to Netflix at the end of this month. Riverdale seems very interesting and is based on the Archie comics as it takes Archie and the gang to a more adult setting of high school and will feature drugs, sex and a mysterious body that washes up. This looks like such an interesting concept and I can’t wait to check it out at the end of the month.

Nothing read this week sorry.

Last Piece of Music Listened to – Inside the Memories by Fear The Clown

So finally this week is my music and while I normally listen to a lot of songs, I haven’t been able to get this song out of my head since I heard it in the pilot for Smallville. This song is great and I definitely recommend people to give it a listen.

Jonnie Dixon; Editor at UGNN:

Tom Clancy's The Division - Ubisoft Massive - Ubisoft

Last Game Played – Tom Clancy’s The Division

So I’ve been playing this recently with Matt and Luke and I’ve gotta say I am actually really enjoying this game, sure it does have some small problems….mainly the bullet sponge enemies that actually have surprisingly good A.I, but still I’d recommend it, but only if you actually have friends to play it with, weirdly I always seem to get into games when the hype dies down on them.

Last Movie Watched – Passengers & Assassins Creed

Yep so as Matt mentioned we saw these together and I think pretty much the same things as him I personally loved Passengers and also think it’s like Titanic, I seriously don’t understand all the hate it got, Chris Pratt was great and so was Jennifer Lawrence, although I will say I’m pretty sure I can point out some significant plot holes but I can do that in Terminator 2 as well and it doesn’t change how awesome it is.

Assassins Creed was pretty decent as well, nothing special but definitely good for a Video game movie, I can’t really say anything about it except it’s faithful enough to the games.

Last TV Show Watched – The Suite Life of Zack & Cody

I know what you’re thinking……I do. I decided to check this out again for the hell of it and despite it having some really silly/dumb humour, I’m actually enjoying it, you can say it’s childish but I don’t care, I enjoy it for what it is.

Last YouTube Video Watched – Latest Screen Junkies Movie Fight

Basically a 2016 rap up episode, haven’t seen any of the films they talked about unfortunately but I do really wanna see La La Land

Sam Elliott; Editor at UGNN:

The Witcher - CD Projekt RED - Atari, POL: CD Projekt

Last Game Played – The Witcher

During Steam’s famous winter sale, I decided to pick up The Witcher 3 with all dlc. It was only £20 so I thought why not. However, just as I was about to install it, I started thinking about the series as a whole. If I was going to spend 100+ hours in a game, I wanted to know about the story completely and even though I knew that 80% of the Witcher 3s player base had probably not played the other 2 games, I decided to purchase the first 2 titles. These 2 games with all DLC only came to £3-4 and that was even more incentive for me to do it. Fast forward a week and I am currently 30 hours into the Witcher 1. I’m really enjoying it, though it is a bit dated, and I can’t wait to start the other 2 titles.

Luke Harrison; Editor at UGNN:

Battlefield 1 - EA DICE - Electronic Arts
Battlefield 1 – EA DICE – Electronic Arts

Last Game Played – Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 is probably one of my favourite fps games in recent years, it’s set in world war 1, which I’ve been waiting for a world war 1 triple A game. The campaigns are one of my favourite of all time (the runner campaign is my favourite by far) and the multiplayer is really fun and intense and the maps are one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Last Movie Watched – Deadpool

I watched this movie again, and I must say it’s still one of my favourite comedy/superhero movies ever. Ryan Reynolds is the perfect fit for Deadpool and I can’t wait for the sequel.

Last TV Show Watched – World of Wrestling

I love wrestling and when ITV brought back WoS wrestling I got excited. It was aired on new years eve and was great to see grado, Johnny moss and other British talent. This shows that Britain has plenty of wrestling talent.

Last YouTube Video Watched – Angry Joe’s Top 10 Worst Games of 2016

I like watching angry joe (I don’t agree with him sometimes but I do find him entertaining) and I feel like he was a bit harsh on some games on the list.

Last Game Played – Garry’s Mod

Played a bit of Prop Hunt as it’s always a good laugh.

Last Movie Watched – 10 Cloverfield Lane

So I finally got around to watching this film as I wanted to see it in the cinema but just didn’t get around to it. I’m glad I did finally get to watch this film as I really enjoyed it. The story was brilliant and the acting from the cast was superb. I thought it would get boring after 20-30 minutes due to it only focusing on 3 people staying put in a bunker but the 3 characters; Howard (John Goodman), Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.) were brilliant and will keep you interested in the film and plot for the duration of the movie. I definitely recommend checking this film out.

Brilliant song, definitely recommend listening to it and also listening to Twenty One Pilots other songs if you have not done so already.
