Bring Back Spyro the Dragon Campaign underway to get Spyro back with Sony

A new campaign has recently appeared online and has caught my attention to bring back Spyro the Dragon; one of the most iconic video game characters to Sony Computer Entertainment.

The campaign which has been online for a few months now on petition website change.org is aiming to get enough supporters to get Sony Computer Entertainment to acknowledge the fans wishes and to hopefully bring everybody’s favorite purple dragon back to the console that made him so well known.

The petition was created by a Spyro the Dragon fan page on Facebook called Spyro HD Collection who have been trying to raise awareness on bringing back this iconic character for a few years now. As of the time of typing; The campaign has received a total of 215 supporters but is still quite a way off achieving it’s goal of 1000 supporters and will need more of the world’s Spyro fans to make their voices heard to make this true gaming icon return.

Spyro the Dragon first appeared on our consoles in late 1998 and has since appeared across 4 different console generations with his most recent appearance being in the Skylanders series from Activision with a new appearance which has since become rather controversial among Spyro fans. The character has been rumored to be returning to Sony now for quite some time alongside his rival on PlayStation; Crash Bandicoot with rumors in 2012 suggesting that Spyro would join Crash in the mascot brawler; PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale however neither character appeared. Reports started to surface earlier last year that Spyro the Dragon had a project in development which was ultimately cancelled for unknown reasons however as the concept art above shows, the project would’ve featured levels set in a dream world.

In a set of interviews in July 2014, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO; Andrew House said that Sony were considering attempting to bring back both Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot saying that these iconic characters are “Never off the table” and that we “Shouldn’t close the door on that one just yet”. This could mean that Sony in this time have possibly bought back or have attempted to purchase the rights to both franchises and with rumors ripe at the moment that a Crash Bandicoot revival could appear at E3 2016; It could be possible we may be seeing Spyro again soon. In addition to Andrew House, In the September of 2014; Insomniac Games CEO; Ted Price stated that making a new Spyro the Dragon could be a possibility for the future when he said “Activision has done a great job with Spyro. They resurrected him and, in my opinion, Skylanders is still about Spyro. It’s got the same aesthetic, the same broad appeal and they’ve done a great job of bringing that character and his world to a brand new set of fans. That’s very hard to do in an age where a lot of games are darker and grittier. We’ll always love Spyro. I’ve learnt to say ‘never say never’ so… who knows?”

  1. I LOVE SPYRO SO MUCH IT WAS THE BEST DRAGON GAME I EVER PLAYED WHEN I WAS A KID AND I STILL PLAY IT, ONLY DAWN OF THE DRAGON CUZ YOU CAN FLY AND PLAY AS CYNDER TOO I LOVED THE PLOTS IT WENT VERY WELL WITH THE SERIES.

  2. It would be a tragedy to see my childhood heroes (Spyro, Sparx, Cynder, Ignitus…) just fade away into the background of video gaming. Skylanders just ain’t gonna cut it. I want my own kids to experience Spyro the way I did as a kid.

  3. Hell yes me and millions and I mean MILLIONS of gamers would be ecstatic to finally have a new real Spyro game that is about classic Spyro, not Skylanders at all. Skylanders version of Spyro is a huge disgrace to the purple dragon we all love, and while Skylanders still manages to make a lot of money, just imagine how many sales a classic Spyro remaster would make with a combination of trillions ofadults fans that grew up with Spyro as kids and the new younger generations getting to experience Spyro the same way we did. Please bring back our classic purple dragon we all know and love.
