Minecraft Console Developer 4J Studios believe they could release the game on Consoles such as Wii U as long as the user base is big enough and the update process runs smoothly.
Minecraft first appeared in the gaming world in the year 2011 for PC from Indie Developer; Mojang and over the years has slowly taken the world by storm with Merchandise and of course the move from PC to home consoles with the 360 & PS3 editions (Thanks to 4J Studios). Right now, 4J Studios are finishing off the upcoming ports to PlayStation 4, Xbox One & PlayStation Vita after the PS4 version recently failed its final test with Sony.
In a recent interview with TotalXbox; 4J Studios’ Daniel Kaplan spoke about the title being adapted for other devices once work on the new versions are complete. “It’s mostly about platforms that make sense, we didn’t anticipate the mobile version to be that big compared to the PC, and it’s the same for consoles. People always compare it to the PC, which is supposed to be like the big original version where you get all the cool features first.” He added “But we have seen there is a massive audience on other platforms so there are still huge groups of people who don’t play on PC at all.”
Kaplan also spoke about how once the PS4 & Xbox One versions are done; Most of the intended platforms for the game are covered however some consoles such as the Wii U are still unaccounted for. “With the release of PS4 and Xbox One I think we have fulfilled most of the needs for now. There aren’t many platforms left to release on. We’ll see, whatever makes sense and if the platform has the user base for it. We won’t release on the platform is the base is very small because it’s much too big of an effort.” In addition to this; Minecraft needs a smooth update process since 4J are always releasing patches to bring new content to the game to keep it up to scratch with the PC Version. “The whole point of Minecraft is that you get updates all the time. If you release somewhere you want to make sure that we will be updating rather than, ‘Oh yeah, we only sold 1000 copies on that platform so let’s kill it off’. That’s not the way Minecraft has been developed.”
At this point it’s unknown if Minecraft will see release on Wii U but it is set to release on PS4, Xbox One & PS Vita later this year and is available now on PC, PS3, Xbox 360 & Mobile Devices.
