The Last of Us Remastered Review

” I’ve struggled a long time with survivin’, but no matter what you have to find something to fight for. ”

The Story

The Last of Us Remastered is set some time in the future after a fungal virus outbreak begins to spread causing everyone afflicted to attack the nearest person and anyone they bite becomes one of them, sounds very familiar I know. You play as Joel a survivor tasked with smuggling a 14 year old girl named Ellie over the country to a group of people known as the Fireflies. The overall story doesn’t sound very complex or interesting but what makes The Last of Us so good is not the goal but the journey to reach that goal and the characters that support you along the way. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is one of the best in gaming history, think The Walking Dead with better gameplay.

The Gameplay

The Last of Us Remastered is pretty basic when it comes to combat you have your simple 3rd person gunfights but your best course of action is to sneak through every encounter as the stealth gameplay is very simple yet incredibly well done, you have items like bottles and bricks to lure away enemy’s whether it’s to move them out of the way for you to sneak around or into a corner to strangle them, the former is very important when dealing with the more dangerous enemies in the game most notably the Clickers which will instantly kill you once they grab you. Ammo is in very low supply especially on the harder difficulties which will have you dieing….. a lot. The game also has a crafting system albeit very simple, you can craft med-kits, Molotov’s, Smoke bombs, Nail bombs and Shivs which all are helpful and can help you out in a pinch.

The Online modes are Supply Raid, Survivors and Interrogation with the only poor one being interrogation which is a mode where you have to down someone with gunfire or melee attacks and then execute them enough times to get a password then open there safe to win the round, I found this mode to be quite boring and really repetitive and plus it was hard to get a game probably since no one was playing it. Supply Raid is a basic Team Death match mode where each team has 20 lives and the first to deplete the opposing teams lives wins, this mode is a lot more fun than Interrogation but it can also take a while and finally we have Survivors which was the main mode I played and my favorite, it is a basic mode where each team has 4 survivors and no re-spawns so once you’re dead there’s no retries until the round finishes, this may put some people off but I liked the idea of if you did poorly then you die and then you have to wait prompting you to do better, first to 4 rounds wins. There are lots of customization items such as better weapons, skills and clothing items also.

The Sound

The Last of Us has little in terms of Soundtrack but this just adds to the emotion. the sounds of the Infected especially the Clickers will be drilled into your head and will leave a lasting impression on you. The voice acting is some of the best with Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson having some of the best interactions in gaming history, very rarely does a game bring out as much emotion in me as this one does.

The Graphics

As this is a ” Remastering ” of The Last of Us you would go into the game expecting there to be visual enhancements and I’m pleased to say there definitely are especially with the environments which have been enhanced making the smallest of details look crisp and gorgeous. The facial animations are still stunning with Joel, Ellie and especially Tess being the stand out picks.

The Lasting Appeal

The Last of Us Remastered has a TON of content packed into the game with a main campaign that usually takes between 12-15 hours, multiple difficulty options, the Left Behind DLC which adds another 2-3 hours and not to mention the brilliant online mode which I spent many, many hours on, you will definitely get plenty of content for your purchase here.

Lasting Appeal

Final Thoughts

The Last of Us is one of my favorite games ever, anyone who missed this masterpiece on PS3 have a chance to redeem themselves now and pick this up. With incredible yet simple gameplay, breathtaking voice acting and graphics and a unbelievable amount of content shoved in The Last of Us Remastered is a must play especially if you missed out on PS3, but just beware you may experience some bad glitches while playing through.

My Score – 9.9/10
