The Story:

PlayStation Vita Pets is a virtual pet simulator and with the game being that genre the story doesn’t have much narrative. The game sees you adopting a puppy and going on an adventure with your puppy to explore an island which has loads of items to find and places to explore.

The Gameplay:

PlayStation Vita Pets is a virtual pet simulator where you raise a puppy in a virtual world. The game obviously bears many similarities to the Nintendo franchise; Nintendogs however this is a good thing as it is familiar gameplay. One of the only annoying things in terms of the gameplay in this game is exactly the same as Nintendogs and that is the voice commands; Especially trying to get the dog to remember its name. Other things you can do in the game is walk your dog aswell as play games with them such as tug of war or fetch. As mentioned in the story segment of the review aswell; You can explore the island with your puppy to find new items which you can then customize your puppy with such as Outfits and more.

The Sound:

PlayStation Vita Pets has a delightful soundtrack which fits in perfectly with the peaceful and relaxed nature of the game. This game also features voice acting as the puppies actually speak to you which as far as I am concerned would be rather enjoyable for children however I personally took a disliking to this feature however there is an option to turn this off to give the game a more traditional pet simulator which in ways made me enjoy the game more.

The Graphics:

Compared to games similar to it (Nintendogs, Dogz, Etc…); PlayStation Vita Pets has great graphics which if the voice acting is turned off adds to the realism of the game. The detail put into the pets looks and movements are great and shows that while it may seem like Sony’s attempt at getting in on the Nintendogs fame; A lot of love has went into the making of this game.

Lasting Appeal:

PlayStation Vita Pets has plenty of reason to replay purely because its essentially a game about looking after a pet however the game has plenty of objects to find and its always fun to play with the pup. Oh and did I forget to mention that there is trophies for this game aswell which helps trophy hunters replay the game aswell.

Final Thoughts:

All in all, PlayStation Vita Pets is an extremely enjoyable game that has a relaxed feel to it. In addition to this as I mentioned in the Graphics section; The game feels like its had a lot of love put into making it and I personally congratulate the entire team who worked on this game for making a fun and enjoyable creation however one of my few criticisms with the game was the lack of dog breeds to choose from.

My Score = 8/10

The Good:

  • Fun & Enjoyable Gameplay
  • Feels Realistic (If Voice Acting is switched off)
  • Feels like a game that love made
  • Graphics are nice
  • Soundtrack is peaceful
  • Plenty of Replayability

The Bad:

  • Voice Acting isn’t great
  • Story was not to interesting
  • Lack of Dog Breeds to choose from
  • Voice commands are frustrating

PlayStation Vita Pets is available now from all good retailers and as the title of the game suggests it is exclusive to PlayStation Vita.
